I have spent some time contemplating the possible effects of AI and machine learning.  We could be facing a future where not only truck drivers and cab drivers are replaced by autonomous vehicles but technical thinking jobs can be replaced by machines capable of learning and creative thought. Retail jobs are being rapidly replaced by one click shopping.

AI may reduce all diseases to the dust bin with polio. We can envision health care and food costs plummeting while work becomes less necessary to exist.

Many workers today define themselves by their jobs, and this progress is most frightening in its effect on human identity, the challenge of how to fill their time.

Will the human desire for control and power be limited? Will the arts flourish?

I would suggest that the desire for meaning may demonstrate itself in a renaissance of religion.
