Only months after losing the White House and both houses of Congress, the leading voice of the party is Jewish Eric Cantor from Virginia, and Michael Steele, a black man, is chairman of the party.

Considering that 75% of the Jews and over 90% of the Blacks voted for Obama this is somewhat startling, so much so that it risks being patronizing. But I do not think that it is.

Eric sees himself in a position much like firebrand Newt Gingrich before the Republicans swept the house during Clinton’s first term. It appears to me that Cantor may be more palatable to both sides of the aisle.

It is too soon to predict the outcome of this change, but these new faces will quickly exploit any opening that the opposition gives them.

They may succeed in repairing the damaged Republican Party faster than anyone would have expected.
