The world feels a lot more dangerous than it is. In the Post American World, Fareed Zakaria notes that we have been living in one of the most peaceful times in history.

“the general magnitude of global warfare has decreased by over 60% since the mid 1980’s, falling by the end of 2004 to the lowest level since the 1950’s”

We did not get daily videos of the killing fields of Cambodia by Pol Pot in the 1970’s but we get immediate footage of every IED in Iraq today. We lost more men in a day in Normandy than in years in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is ironic that Bush is hated so much for his war, yet he may be seen in history as serving during one of the most peaceful periods in decades.
