from Winston Churchill’s “The Gathering Storm”- the first of his five volumns on the history of WWII.

” One day President Roosevelt told me that he was asking publicly for suggestions about what the war should be called. I said at once, “the Unnecessary War.” There never was a war more easy to stop than that which has just wrecked what was left of the world from the previous struggle.”

from HKO- this passage has always struck me. The Gathering Storm detailed how the blind pursuit of peace and isolation allowed an evil to develop to a catastrophic outcome that could not be ignored ; that we intentionally allowed our forces to deteriorate to a level that encouraged an enemy that we became ill prepared to encounter.

I wonder what history will call the next war.
