History students have pondered why Winston Churchill, so victorious in leading the British through WWII was so easily defeated and dismissed from office immediately after the war. Likewise how was George H Bush defeated after a 90% approval rating after the victorious Desert Storm.

The answer may be that after the soul wrenching period of a war the people are anxious to move on to the levities of peacetime politics. The reason Clinton was able to say, “it’s the economy stupid,” was only because of the success of Bush the elder in defeating Sadaam Hussein and removing him from Kuwait.

Ironically it is only because Bush was so successful in defeating terrorism, preventing a widely expected attack, and making us feel as secure as we do that we would even consider a candidate like Obama.

It is not Bush’s failures in Iraq that has enabled Barak, it was his success.
